Detection of carboxylesterase and esterase activity in culturable gut bacterial flora isolated from diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), from India and its possible role in indoxacarb degradation BJM
Ramya,Shanivarsanthe Leelesh; Venkatesan,Thiruvengadam; Srinivasa Murthy,Kottilingam; Jalali,Sushil Kumar; Verghese,Abraham.
Abstract Diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), is a notorious pest of brassica crops worldwide and is resistant to all groups of insecticides. The insect system harbors diverse groups of microbiota, which in turn helps in enzymatic degradation of xenobiotic-like insecticides. The present study aimed to determine the diversity of gut microflora in DBM, quantify esterase activity and elucidate their possible role in degradation of indoxacarb. We screened 11 geographic populations of DBM in India and analyzed them for bacterial diversity. The culturable gut bacterial flora underwent molecular characterization with 16S rRNA. We obtained 25 bacterial isolates from larvae (n = 13) and adults (n = 12) of DBM. In larval gut isolates,...

Direct analysis of vicariance in Neotropical mayflies (Ephemeroptera) Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOLINERI,CARLOS; NIETO,CAROLINA; DOMÍNGUEZ,EDUARDO.
Abstract: The distribution of aquatic insects has been poorly explored in quantitative analyses aiming at the historical reconstruction of area relationships in the Neotropics. Ephemeroptera is an ancient group, characterized by its low vagility, and of high richness and endemicity in this region. Systematic knowledge of the group has enormously increased in the last decades, achieving a sufficient background to explore biogeographical historical patterns. Our aim is to reconstruct area history in the Neotropics using the rationale of Barrier biogeography (Hovenkamp protocol). We present eleven mayfly phylogenies, representing groups that evolved independently at least from the Jurassic (i.e., not a one-taxon history). With these groups, we conducted...

Discovery of a New Clade Nested Within the Genus Alexandrium (Dinophyceae): Morpho-molecular Characterization of Centrodinium punctatum (Cleve) F.J.R. Taylor ArchiMer
Li, Zhun; Mertens, Kenneth; Nézan, Elisabeth; Chomérat, Nicolas; Bilien, Gwenael; Iwataki, Mitsunori; Shin, Hyeon Ho.
Investigation of phytoplankton from East China Sea of the Pacific Ocean, offshore Réunion Island of the Indian Ocean, and the French Atlantic coast revealed a species of poorly known armored fusiform dinoflagellate. To clarify this species, morphology and phylogeny based on mitochondrial and nuclear protein gene sequence (Cox1, Cob and Hsp90) concatenated with the SSU, ITS region and LSU rDNA sequences were analysed. Epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the nucleus of the specimen was elongated, sausage-shaped and located equatorially on the left lateral side of the cell, and that the plate formula is Po, 3′, 1a, 6″, 6C, 8S, 5‴, 1p, 2′‴. These morphological features indicate that the species can be assigned to...

Distributional patterns of the Neotropical genus Thecomyia Perty (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) and phylogenetic support Rev. Bras. entomol.
Pires,Amanda Ciprandi; Marinoni,Luciane.
Distributional patterns of the Neotropical genus Thecomyia Perty (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) and phylogenetic support. The distributional pattern of the genus Thecomyia Perty, 1833 was defined using panbiogeographic tools, and analyzed based on the phylogeny of the group. This study sought to establish biogeographical homologies in the Neotropical region between different species of the genus, based on their distribution pattern and later corroboration through its phylogeny. Eight individual tracks and 16 generalized tracks were identified, established along nearly the entire swath of the Neotropics. Individual tracks are the basic units of a panbiogeographic study, and correspond to the hypothesis of minimum distribution of the organisms involved. The...

Diversification of chemosymbiotic bivalves: origins and relationships of deeper water Lucinidae ArchiMer
Taylor, John D.; Glover, Emily A.; Williams, Suzanne T..
Although species of the chemosymbiotic bivalve family Lucinidae are often diverse and abundant in shallow water habitats such as seagrass beds, new discoveries show that the family is equally speciose at slope and bathyal depths, particularly in the tropics, with records down to 2500m. New molecular analyses including species from habitats down to 2000m indicate that these cluster in four of seven recognized subfamilies: Leucosphaerinae, Myrteinae, Codakiinae, and Lucininae, with none of these comprising exclusively deep-water species. Amongst the Leucosphaerinae, Alucinoma, Epidulcina, Dulcina, and Myrtina live mainly at depths greater than 200m. Most Myrteinae inhabit water depths below 100m, including Myrtea, Notomyrtea, Gloverina, and Elliptiolucina...

Diversification of Ramphastinae (Aves, Ramphastidae) prior to the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary as shown by molecular clock of mtDNA sequences Genet. Mol. Biol.
Nahum,Laila Alves; Pereira,Sérgio Luiz; Campos Fernandes,Flora Maria de; Russo Matioli,Sergio; Wajntal,Anita.
Partial cytochrome b and 12S rDNA mitochondrial DNA sequences of eight representatives of the Ramphastidae family were analyzed. We applied the linearized tree method to identify sequences evolving at similar rates and estimated the divergence times among some of the taxa analyzed. After excluding Ramphastos tucanus and Capito dayi from our data set, the remaining taxa presented a constant rate of DNA substitution, and branch lengths could be re-estimated with a clock constraint using the maximum likelihood method. Branch lengths were calibrated assuming that Galliformes and Piciformes split around 100 million years ago (mya). Our results indicate that Ramphastinae, and probably Capitoninae, diverged from other Piciformes in the Late Cretaceous (~82 mya),...

Diversité génétique chez les huîtres creuses du genre Crassostrea : quelles ressources pour quelle amélioration des productions de C; gigas? ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre.
Despite the economic importance of oyster farming, knowledge about genetic resources of these species is still limited. The objectives of my research were to provide further information about (1) taxomomy, phylogeny and phylogeography of Crassostrea oysters, (2) to compare C. gigas and C. angulata strains of various geographic origins and (3) to study phenotypic and genetic variation for traits of aquacultural interest in C. gigas. Studies based on DNA polymorphism and chromosomes allowed to improve or correct identification, geographic range and phylogeographic relationships among several species. The comparison of various strains of C. gigas and C. angulata, both in laboratory and field conditions, revealed significant differences among taxa and the...

Diversity and evolution of plant diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGATs) unveiled by phylogenetic, gene structure and expression analyses Genet. Mol. Biol.
Turchetto-Zolet,Andreia Carina; Christoff,Ana Paula; Kulcheski,Franceli Rodrigues; Loss-Morais,Guilherme; Margis,Rogerio; Margis-Pinheiro,Marcia.
Abstract Since the first diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) gene was characterized in plants, a number of studies have focused on understanding the role of DGAT activity in plant triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis. DGAT enzyme is essential in controlling TAGs synthesis and is encoded by different genes. DGAT1 and DGAT2 are the two major types of DGATs and have been well characterized in many plants. On the other hand, the DGAT3 and WS/DGAT have received less attention. In this study, we present the first general view of the presence of putative DGAT3 and WS/DGAT in several plant species and report on the diversity and evolution of these genes and its relationships with the two main DGAT genes (DGAT1 and DGAT2). According to our analyses DGAT1, DGAT2,...

Diversity and systematics of the sequestrate genus Octaviania in Japan: two new subgenera and eleven new species Naturalis
Orihara, T.; Smith, M.E.; Shimomura, N.; Iwase, K.; Maekawa, N..
The sequestrate fungi of Japan, including truffle and truffle-like fungi, have not been well characterized but are potentially diverse. We investigated the diversity and phylogeny of Japanese Octaviania specimens using a multifaceted approach including scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS and LSU) and EF-1α (tef1) sequences. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the genus Octaviania is divided into three major clades, and that there are at least 12 species-level lineages in Japan. Accordingly, we describe two new subgenera, Parcaea and Fulvoglobus, and eleven new species. Subgenus Parcaea accommodates four highly divergent, but macromorphologically almost indiscernible cryptic species. We discuss not...

DNA barcoding resolves species complexes in Stigmella salicis and S. aurella species groups and shows additional cryptic speciation in S. salicis (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Mutanen, M.; Doorenweerd, C..
We sequenced the mitochondrial barcoding marker COI and nuclear marker EF1-alpha for most Nordic and other European species of the Stigmella salicis and S. aurella species groups. In the S. salicis group both markers confirm the synonymy of S. lappovimella with S. zelleriella. Specimens previously identified as Stigmella salicis and S. vimineticola are shown to form a complex of several cryptic species for which the taxonomy needs to be worked out. The species previously recorded as S. vimineticola from Norway represents probably an unnamed species. In the S. aurella group, the oligophagous Rosaceae feeders S. aurella and S. poterii are confirmed to be each a single oligophagous species. The synonymy between Stigmella ulmariae from Filipendula ulmaria and...

Dominance of individual plant species is more important than diversity in explaining plant biomass in the forest understorey ArchiMer

Questions How does plant community diversity influence variation in plant biomass? There are two competing hypotheses: the ‘biomass‐ratio hypothesis’, where biomass is influenced by the abundance and traits of the most dominant species, and the ‘diversity hypothesis’, where the diversity of organisms influences biomass through mechanisms such as niche complementarity. However, no studies have tested which one of these two hypotheses better explains the variation in plant biomass in the forest understorey. Location Temperate deciduous forests in Northern France. Methods For the forest understorey, we assessed species diversity and biomass as well as soil and light conditions in 133 forest plots of 100m² each. Doryctorgilus gen. nov. and other new taxa, with a study of the internal microsculpture of the ovipositor in the subfamily Orgilinae Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Naturalis
Braet, Y.; Achterberg, C. van.
One new monotypic genus of the subfamily Orgilinae Ashmead, 1900 (type species: D. morvanae spec. nov.), two new species of the genus Podorgilus van Achterberg, 1994 (P. nemorensis spec. nov. and P. luteus spec. nov.) and one new species of the genus Agathis Latreille, 1804 (A. depressifrons spec. nov.) are described. The internal microsculpture of the ovipositor in several genera of the subfamily Orgilinae has been examined and revealed several new features with a potentially high phylogenetic value. A cladistic analysis has been performed with some of these new character-states which corroborate the recognition of the tribe Mimagathidini Enderlein, 1905 (excluding the subtribe Mesocoelina Viereck, 1918), and support the division of this subfamily into...

Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage in a tropical floodplain: effects of trophic, spatial and phylogenetic structures Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Edson Fontes; Goulart,Erivelto; Breda,Luciani; Minte-Vera,Carolina Viviana; Paiva,Luiz Ricardo de Souza; Vismara,Melina Rizzato.
Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage from the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, were described and evaluated according to trophic (guilds), spatial (habitats) and phylogenetic (taxonomic distances) structures. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Research Project (LTER-CNPq/UEM/NUPELIA) in August and October 2001. Thirty-five species were analyzed from thirty-one morphological variables. Strong significant correlations (Mantel test) between morphology and trophic guilds and between morphology and taxonomy were found, while morphology and habitat revealed a weak correlation. However, the partial Mantel test showed that the correlations between morphology and trophic guilds persist even when the effect of taxonomy is discounted....

Estudo filogenético de Mesembrinellinae com ênfase no gênero Eumesembrinella Townsend (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Zoologia
Toma,Ronaldo; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
A study of phylogenetic relationships of the genera of Mesembrinellinae and of the species of Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931, on the ground of shared derived character states (synapomorphies) is presented. Resulting the following assumption: Laneella Mello, 1967 presenting sister group relationship with all other Mesembrinellinae, followed by Souzalopesiella Guimarães, 1977, M. peregrina Aldrich, 1922 that was isolated from Mesembrinella Giglio-Tos, 1893. Mesembrinella was considered paraphiletic, its species were judged in changeable positions at the bifurcation point of analysis of Albuquerquea Mello, 1967 with the tricotomic interrelationships of Thompsoniella Guimarães, 1977, Huascaromusca Townsend, 1918 and Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931. European species of Clavaria (Agaricales, Agaricomycetes) with dark basidiomata – a morphological and molecular study Naturalis
Kautmanová, I.; Tomšovský, M.; Dueñas, M.; Martín, M.P..
Clavaria species with dark basidiomata occurring in Europe were analysed using morphological and molecular methods. Morphological analyses revealed four groups containing seven Clavaria species with dark basidiomata. Phylogenetic analysis of the LSU nrDNA region confirmed the separate positions of all seven Clavaria species within the genus. All sequences were grouped in four well-supported clades, mostly corresponding to defined morphological species. The results of the molecular study are inconsistent with the infrageneric classification of Clavaria based on the presence or absence of clamps on the bases of basidia and two widely accepted subgenera. Clavaria and Holocoryne appear to be polyphyletic. A new approach in species delimitation is presented: 1)...
